Self-Loading Mixer Maintenance Schedule & Spare Parts Guide
A self-loading mixer works in the worst conditions on any site — abrasive aggregate, cement dust, water, and off-road ground. Most failures we hear about trace back to two things: concrete allowed to cure inside the drum, and grease points that were skipped. Here is a schedule that prevents both.
Every day
- Wash out the drum and chute at the end of every shift, without exception. Cured concrete inside the drum is the single most expensive avoidable repair.
- Check engine oil, coolant and hydraulic oil levels before starting.
- Walk around: tyre condition and pressure, visible hydraulic leaks, loose or missing bolts.
- Test the weighing display against a known load if the day’s concrete is inspected.
- Check the loading bucket and arm pins for play.
Every week
- Grease all lubrication points — articulation joint, loading-arm pins, drum slew bearing.
- Clean the air filter; in dusty conditions this becomes a daily job.
- Inspect the mixing screws and drum liner for wear and build-up.
- Check hydraulic hoses for chafing where they cross the articulation joint.
- Check battery terminals and the condition of wiring looms near the drum.
Every month
- Change or check engine oil and filters per the engine manufacturer’s interval.
- Check reduction gearbox and axle oil levels.
- Recalibrate the weighing system.
- Inspect brake performance and the parking brake.
- Torque-check wheel nuts and the main structural bolts.
Every year (or major interval)
- Change hydraulic oil and the return filter.
- Change gearbox and axle oil.
- Inspect the drum liner and mixing screws properly — plan replacement before they fail mid-project.
- Full inspection of the articulation joint and its bearings.
- Check the frame and loading arm for cracks, especially around welds.
Spare parts worth keeping on site
Especially if you are far from a dealer or importing to a remote market:
- Filters — engine oil, fuel, air, hydraulic return
- Hydraulic hoses for the loading arm and drum circuit, plus fittings and seals
- Loading-arm and bucket pins and bushings
- Drum liner segments and mixing-screw wear parts
- Belts, a spare load cell, and common electrical relays and fuses
- Grease, hydraulic oil and engine oil in working quantities
